лучше было бы здесь что нибудь типа "dies without notice" или "finds himself quite suddenly mortal"
как и переведено на p.132 "What can you do? Man is mortal, and as was said - most aptly - often suddenly mortal."

Ну, уж это положительно интересно, — трясясь от хохота проговорил профессор, — что же это у вас, чего ни хватишься, ничего нет!

"Oh, but this is really interesting," the professor cried shaking with laughter. "It seems no matter what you name here, it does not exist!"
здесь хитро... может что то в таком духе: "well, how come, whatever I name, you do not have it here"
