Как то на днях ходила в универ на лекцию (приезжают разные visiting scholars и рассказывают о своих исследованиях - всегда очень интересно), на этот раз был социолог из Австралии Dr. Evan Willis, рассказывал про "The social relations of emergent genetic biotechnologies: Control, surveillance and exclusion".

Foucault: biopower ...

- genetic discrimination
- creation of genetic underclass
- stigmatizing
- increasing amount can be done against you, and not much can be done for you, on the basis of the advances of genetic science.

Having mutation in your genotipe impacts on what happens to you in society. DNA tasting in not quite the same as the fingerprints - knowledge on your genotype gives information not only about you, but about your family and even about your possible future diary.

Can you remain genetically innosent?

We can't make tentative DNA testing, in the same way as one can't be tentatively pregnant. Once its done, it becomes extreemely difficult to avoid the consequences...
Material development of technology is going faster than understanding of social and legal issues. The social relations are build into technology.

Genetic parent is started to be prioritized over social parent => the biological discource takes primacy over social discource. What is parent, sibling, kinship - these consepts are not unproblematic anymore, their content and meaning is changing.

Genetic science becomes a new patriarchal instrument of controlling women's sexuality

There were also known cases when government asked for pre-migration genetic screening, to prevent people with certain types of genes to enter the country... In the future a new classes can appear:
-genetically enhanced
- "normal"
- genetic underclass.

At the same time - what is "normal" is nerrowing, as the effect of medical technology.

Individual vs. private benefits: are there limits to the privacy of genetic information? Do we have an inalienable right to refuse testing when common wellbeing is involved? How do we promote social inclusion, not exclusion? How to prevent commercial exploitation of DNA databases? (But the UK DNA databank, for instance, is organized primarily for commercial use.) How about the socialist type of health care, when government may request everybody to go through the DNA testing, justifying this by the communal wellbeing and the goal of minimizing the cost of health care for the society? In the individualist type of health care a completely different political economy is in play.

Employment: currently an employer has to fix the place (making sure that the employee would not damage his/her health too soon), now an employer can fix the worker - not employing anyone with certain DNA types.

Genetic differences thus can transcend class, race... the new social groups are formed according to the type of genetic mutation...
